It takes more than a palm to hold (an) Apple.
Apple, Inc. has released iTunes 8.2.1 which:
“provides a number of important bug fixes and addresses an issue with verification of Apple devices.”
The fix for the “verification” issue appears to disable syncing with the Palm Pre, which was previously able to sync with iTunes by masquerading as an iPhone.
Of course anyone (okay, most anyone) that uses iTunes, and this includes Palm Pre owners (look for my forthcoming, and certainly epic post: blackberry IS all business), likely downloaded the update and installed it without reading the notes.
I did that.
Mind you, I knew the challenge was coming (it was inevitable – we are talking Apple here), but not precisely when or how.
…And, now you know I am currently using a Palm Pre (If you really care, and require additional information to manage perspective, and avoid sleepless nights, point your browser to: candid colored Apple).
More on that later (and, don’t forget to look for the other aforementioned post – it’s a barn burner).
Meanwhile… Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr said the update:
“disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre.”
Skalawags! Swine! Brilliant!
Palm spokeswoman Leslie Letts said Apple’s move is a:
“direct blow to their users, who will be deprived of a seamless synchronization experience.”
So, if they had a Pre in palm hand they could use iTunes. That option no longer exists.
Or so Apple would have you believe.
For a workaround, it should be noted, Palm Pre owners can stick to the older version of iTunes (you can easily uninstall the newest version and reload the prior version).
I did that.
By the way… You can also move music from computers (Macs are best) to a Pre with a USB cable, or consider certain, unnamed, third-party music applications.
Stay tuned for updates and insight around this epic smackdown. There will likely be more to it. Oh yes, there most certainly will.
Peace be to my Brothers and Sisters.
