Dreams Deferred

What happens to a dream deferred?
Does it dry up
Like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore–
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over–
like a syrupy sweet?
Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.
Or does it explode?

This is “Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes

This poem is an excellent example of how an economical number of words can be used to great effect. Since the poem is a cautionary tale – essentially warning that desire delayed is desire denied – it was wise for Hughes to get to the ‘punchline’ quickly. The word ‘explode’ is perfect, hinting at the boiling point a soul can reach when not satisfied. Furthermore, it’s interesting how Hughes suggests literal and concrete reactions to a figurative and intangible notion.

Samsung A707

I am confident the Apple iPhone is going to be terrific.

But, I don’t want to use my cellular telephone for email (I don’t want to be THAT accessible). And, I am not interested in surfing the internet on that small screen. That is what I use a 24″ iMac for.

But, I like cool gadgets. The Samsung A707 Sync phone from Cingular easily qualifies. It has a sleek feel. It comes in cool colors. It syncs to the vehicles I drive (and, my iMac) quickly and reliably via Bluetooth. And, it’s a 3G phone that works all over the world.

But, it’s not compatible with Apples iSync. This is, of course, ironic considering Cingular’s HUGE deal with Apple over the iPhone. Never mind.

You can do essentially the same thing right from the Apple OSX Address Book. NOTE: This is assuming you have already paired your Apple (we don’t discuss PC’s on this BLOG) and the A707. Open up the Apple Address Book; Highlight the addresses you want to send by performing a “select all” of your Contacts; Click on the Bluetooth icon (the last icon just above the group column); In the Card menu choose “Send this Card…”; A list of your Paired Bluetooth devices should come up; Choose your phone (SGH-A707); You may have to do the usual acknowledgment, and permission on the phone side; And, export them as one big vCard. It’s pretty straight forward.

Obviously, you can also Bluetooth Contacts back-and-forth with your Apple. But, that isn’t interesting – and, not relevant to this topic.

Meanwhile, I sent over a report to Nova Media with an expectation they will update their brilliant Sync Plugins soon. Eventually Apple will get around to updating iSync so the Samsung A707 and similar phones can play nice.
